History
Legal & General Life Assurance Society was founded in 1836 to provide Life Assurance for the Legal community. In the early 20th Century, the client base was broadened to include non-lawyers, and the range of insurance products offered has been constantly updated from that time.
In the 1970s, Legal & General Investments was established (which later became Legal & General Investment Management), and started to manage pension fund assets on an active basis for external clients. We were appointed by our first external index fund client in 1986 and in March 1987, we were the first UK company to offer pooled index funds for UK pension funds.
Ownership
LGIM's ultimate parent company is Legal & General Group Plc, which is one of the UK's top 100 companies.
